Infant Eczema

Did you know?

Nearly 20% of the world’s baby population will have at least one outbreak of Infant Eczema in the first year of their life.

Signs of Infant Eczema

Eczema appears as scabby or flaky dry patches on the surface of the skin. Infant’s skin does not have a mature protective barrier to protect the skin from moisture loss as well as adult skin does, hence moisture is lost more rapidly resulting in excessive dryness (eczema).

Infant Eczema is a chronic skin condition that can develop at any time during the first three years of infancy. This form of Eczema does go away, but can cause discomfort and itchiness for baby while present, which may lead to infections from constant irritation and scratching.

To prevent flare ups and further irritation, follow the following guidelines:

• Dress baby in cotton clothes, synthetic fibres can irritate sensitive skin

• Dry air or extreme cold temperatures can dry babies skin out, apply a cold cream to protect your babies skin (such as Mustela Environmental Protection Cream)

• Food allergies can cause flare-ups of Infant Eczema, as well as environmental factors such as a change in water, change in skin care products or moving to a new climate.

• Stress and Emotional upset (i.e teething, change in care taker, etc.)
