Skin Problems due to lack of Exfoliation

Skin Problems due to lack of Exfoliation

Exfoliation is an important part of maintaining and keeping your skin healthy looking. Exfoliation removes build up of keratinized, dead and dull skin cells from the top layer of skin, the stratum corneum.

The stratum corneum is the outermost layer of the skin. Every 28 days your skin renews itself by shedding dead skin cells and pushing new ones up gradually through the dermis and epidermis.

As we age, however; this process of renewing itself slows, resulting in a build up of keratinized, dead skin.

Problems may arise from this build up such as uneven skin tone, texture, clogged pores or skin may take on a whole new look such as “orange peel” texture (hyper – keratinized skin).

Here are four basic tips on how to prevent or treat changes in skin due to lack of exfoliation:

1. Exfoliate once to twice a week (extremely hyper-keratinized skin may need three times per week)

2. Wear an SPF daily to protect your skin from further sun damage (can cause damaged, hyper-keratinized skin)

3. Moisturize your skin daily to promote moisture retention in your skin

4. Consider using a glycolic product, or having a Glycolic Facial once a month until skin texture and clarity improves.
