Transforming a dull space into a delightful spa sanctuary…
Le Petit Spa in Vancouver, BC, represents the embodiment of a lifelong dream for owner, Nancy Mudford. Owning a small business is a dream come true for her. A spa was the ultimate solution.

In early 2003, Nancy decided to make her dream a reality. After viewing a number of potential sites around Vancouver, she settled on the Broadway and Alma location because it was situated in a terrific neighbourhood, had convenient parking available and wasn’t near any other spa.
On July 19, 2003, Nancy received the keys to the future home of Le Petit Spa. At slightly more than 2,200 square feet, the space had been a video store. It was plain and lacked character or warmth, but Nancy had a vision and she rolled up her sleeves and began.

The next two months saw a flurry of activity and renovations as change rooms, a shower room and five treatment rooms were constructed. Inspired by the sunny hillsides of rural France, Nancy worked with Julie Trant of Square Feet Interiors to select colours, furnishings and fabrics that were beautiful, simple and well-suited to Vancouver’s laid back style. She conducted dozens of interviews, hiring seven experienced licensed estheticians and a spa manager for the official opening on September 10, 2003.
Even after the spa opened, we continued upgrading the space to provide more effective and efficient service while maintaining a relaxing and peaceful environment. Based on customer feedback, we made a number of changes, including reconfiguring the pedicure area to open up the space and slow traffic through the area.
Here we grow again…
In July 2004, we had an unexpected but welcome opportunity to expand when the 725-square-foot space adjoining the spa became available. While we were excited about the additional space, we knew it meant more renovations. After obtaining the necessary approvals from City Hall, we took a deep breath and began painting, decorating and organizing.
We moved our pedicure and manicure areas into the new space, helping to give the entire spa a more airy and relaxed feel. This also enabled us to better accommodate spa parties and groups and control the sound levels around the treatment rooms.
As part of the renovations, we upgraded our sound system to provide music in all treatment rooms and to enable us to provide different music in different areas, according to our needs. We upgraded the lighting in our makeup area and implemented better temperature controls.
The greatest challenge during this time was making all these changes while minimizing inconvenience to our clients. Although some work could be done after closing, some had to be done during work hours, and we thank our clients for their patience and understanding during this time. On September 9th, Le Petit Spa held a first anniversary celebration and two days later, the new section of the spa, including the new pedicure area, opened.
