Men’s skin – how is it different than a women’s?
It has been said “men age like a fine wine: the older it gets, the better.” But is this true when it comes to our skin? Recent studies have shown that in fact, it is!
Did you know? Men typically have 20% more collagen and elastin in their skin? Collagen and elastin are proteins that naturally occur in our skin that are responsible for maintaining our tone, elasticity, and texture. These two proteins naturally decrease in quantity as we age.
Recent studies have shown that because of men having about 20% more collagen in their skin than women do, women generally age a lot quicker than our male counterparts do.
Women also get the “short end of the stick” when it comes to hormones and skin. Researchers are also stating that when women hit menopause, the natural decrease in estrogen levels also results in a more rapid rate in aging of the skin. Lucky us!
But, this doesn’t necessarily mean that men have better skin than we do. Men generally have oilier, thicker, rougher skin than women do; more breakouts, more oil and hard-to-manage skin types.
Looking for answers on how to help your man take care of his skin? Read the 4 tips below on professional advice from your skin care specialists at Le Petit Spa.
1. Gel Cleanser – not only will he like the gel, fresh texture, but it won’t make him feel greasy or like he’s slapped on too heavy of a product. I recommend Phytomer Homme Line: Global Pur Detoxifying Cleansing Gel. The skin is left clean and fresh!
2. Alcohol free After Shave – Alcohol dries the skin, causing the skin to go into reactive mode and produce even more oil to protect itself. Plus, it can sting and cause irritation applying it right after shaving. Get him an aftershave with a masculine scent both of you will love: Phytomer Homme: Rasage Perfect Cool Marine Soothing Aftershave. Alcohol free, masculine scented and doubles as a toner to use after cleansing the skin.
What is a toner? A toner is a liquid emulsion that helps to rid the skin of any left over residue from your cleanser and/or water. Usually used on a cotton pad and swiped over the skin, they balance your skin to a natural Ph level and leave the skin feeling fresh.
3. Exfoliant - Used to rid the skin of a build up of dead skin cells, these products can help your man keep his skin clear of breakouts while refining the texture of his skin. With the same masculine scent as in his other Phytomer Homme products, this is used once to twice a week. Phytomer Homme: Global Pur Oxygenating Exfoliating Face Care is an exfoliant that will have his skin looking and feeling its best!
4. Moisturizer – This is the last, but not least most important step in skin care (both for a man and women). Moisturizers slow the aging process by retaining our skin natural moisture levels and preventing it from drying out. It also helps by regulating oil production; if your skin is dry, it will increase the production of oil to protect itself, causing skin in - balance and breakouts. I recommend Phytomer Homme: Facial Protect Comforting Moisturizer Care.
