Microdermabrasion - what, who, and why?
Microdermabrasion at Le Petit Spa
May 1st has come and gone already and Le Petit Spa has launched their brand new spa service and treatment menu!
This month, we feature our Microdermabrasion Facial as our service promotion for the month of May.
This blog talks about Microdermabrasion, what it is, how it works, who it is for and why!
What is a Microdermabrasion Treatment?
Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive method of exfoliating the skin. Microdermabrasion has been around since the 1980’s but the theory about sloughing off the top layer of skin to rejuvenate your skin’s look has been around since about 1500 B.C.
Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive, non-chemical means of gently removing the top layer of skin (the dead, keratinized skin cells) to reveal fresh, younger skin cells underneath. This is done by a gentle flow of corundum crystals (a semi-precious grade of sapphire that is ground up into a fine sand) that is gently blown onto the skin, removing dead skin and debris as it is then suctioned back into the Microdermabrasion machine with a gentle vacuum suction.
Who is Microdermabrasion for?
Microdermabrasion is perfect for most skin types; however, there are some clients who cannot have Microdermabrasion treatments:
- Clients experiencing pustule acne
- Clients with Rosacea
- Clients that have HIV or other immune system deficiencies
- Sunburned skin
- Extremely thin-skinned clients
- Clients that have extremely sensitive skin.
Clients that can have Microdermabrasion treatments are:
- Mature skin types
- Dry skin types
- Oily skin types
- Combination skin
- Thickened or keratinized skin types
- All skin types needing general exfoliation
Other skin ailments that have been successfully treated by Microdermabrasion treatments:
Pigmentation - Age spots and brown pigmentation on the skin can be significantly reduced with an average of six sessions; as it takes about 28 days to see results of spa services on your skin we recommend one treatment for six consecutive weeks.
Uneven skin texture - Exfoliating the skin on a regular basis allows for the skin to renew and regenerate itself more evenly. An “orange peel” looking skin texture can be smoothed and enlarged pores can be diminished in appearance after about six treatments.
Oily Skin - If you suffer from excessive oily skin, a Microdermabrasion treatment can balance oil production and oil secretions clearing your pores and removing impurities that can cause blemish flare - ups.
Clients that also have scars left from acne may benefit from a Microdermabrasion treatment as this will stimulate collagen production, plump up the scars and help them heal and become even with the surface area of the skin.
General exfoliation needs - perhaps your regular exfoliate gives you great results but you’re ready for something new.
Why does Microdermabrasion work?
Microdermabrasion was developed to treat the signs of aging, such as fine lines and wrinkles, by exfoliating and stimulating the skin. When the skin “thinks” that it is being “hurt” it naturally boosts up collagen and elastin production to protect and regenerate itself. When collagen and elastin are produced, the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles decreases as they are being “plumped” up with the new collagen and elastin tissues.
This is one of the main reasons why clients have such great results from a Microdermabrasion treatment - it is highly regenerating, there is no recovery time or “down time” needed as in other cosmetic procedures and the skin is not hurt or damaged in anyway.
