Should I be Waxing or Threading?

Eyebrows are one of the most important features on our face. They help frame the face and make us look younger and more awake.

A professionally done eyebrow treatment is clean and even on both sides of the face. They give you the confidence to carry out your day-to-day meetings.

However, the majority of us probably had times of unfortunate eyebrow experiences in our early stages of life, whether it's over plucking too many hairs and shaping the line too thin.

But that shouldn't stop you from grooming those brows! The key is to find what works best for you.

What is Waxing and How Does it Work?

There are two options for hair removal for the face: waxing and threading. Waxing is the most common way and widely used in almost every spa or waxing bar you go.

Waxing is the most common way and is widely used in almost every spa or waxing bar you go to.

The process includes a hot wax (there are two types: hard wax for sensitive areas such as the genital area and soft wax for the rest of the body such as the arms, legs, face, and underarms), cotton wax paper, and a medical popsicle stick.

The main ingredient in all waxes is pine resin which helps the wax harden and adhere to the skin, hair follicles and wax paper.

To being waxing, the waxing specialist will rub baby powder on the treated area to help the wax stick better onto the skin and the hair follicles.

A medical popsicle stick is then dipped into the hot wax and a generous amount of wax is applied on the area where the hair is shown.

Before the wax cools, a strip of cotton wax paper is applied on top of the wax and the wax is then quickly pulled off. The unwanted hairs are removed and stuck onto the wax paper.

Afterward, a soothing lotion can be applied to the treated area for relieving sensitivity and discomfort.

Waxing is Convenient:

The major advantage of waxing over threading is its convenience to cover large surface areas.woman getting her leg waxed

Waxing is suitable for all parts of the body especially areas with an abundance of hair, whereas threading is primarily for the full face. Threading for the arms, legs and other parts of the body is uncommon and requires a lot of time,

Threading for the arms, legs and other parts of the body is uncommon and requires a lot of time, patience, and skill.

Pros of Waxing

  • Fast and inexpensive
  • Precision
  • Less painful
  • Suitable for all parts of the body
  • Hair grows back finer
  • Lasts 6 to 8 weeks

Cons of Waxing

  • Skin sensitivity and tenderness for a couple hours after waxing
  • Requires at least 1 cm of hair
  • Can cause redness and bleeding
  • Can cause irritation to the skin
  • Risk of allergic reaction due to the ingredients of the wax or cross contamination

Waxing is not suitable for those with sensitive skin because as mentioned above, waxing can cause sensitivity, irritation, redness, or bleeding to the skin.

This is because the wax not only pulls off the hair from the root but also pulls off the top layer of the skin.

If this sounds scary to you, consider threading!

What is Threading and How Does It Work?

Threading is increasingly becoming more popular over the years and many western countries are taking on the trend as a cost effective alternative to waxing.

The process of threading is more simple than waxing because it only requires one material, cotton thread. As with waxing, baby powder is rubbed on the treated area before threading to prevent the cotton thread from slipping and sliding on the skin.

The cotton thread is doubled and twisted and then rolled over the unwanted hairs, removing them from the surface of the skin. Afterward, a soothing lotion can be applied to the treated area to ease the pain and relieve any discomfort.

The main advantage of threading is that it does not use any harsh chemicals that can irritate or damage the skin, therefore there is no risk of allergic reactions.

This makes threading highly suitable for those with sensitive skin.

Threading is also a good option if you are only looking for a full facial hair removal.

If you are in a hurry, threading get can you in and out of the waxing bar in a heartbeat!

Pros of Threading

  • Fast and inexpensive

  • Does not cause allergic reactions
  • Hair grows back finer
  • Lasts 6 to 10 weeks

Cons of Waxing

  • More painful
  • Causes discomfort
  • Not suitable for other parts of the body (aside from the full face)
  • Requires at least 1 cm of hair
  • Does not require a license, therefore hair removal process may not be professional.
