How to Prepare for Your First Bikini Wax

Waxing can be a scary and tortuous experience, but no pain, no gain. Although on the positive side, waxing is more effective than shaving because it lasts longer, hair grows back finer, and there are fewer chances of irritation.

Read our blog about waxing to learn more. If you have had waxing before, the eyebrows, upper lip, underarms, arms and legs should be easy going.

But when it comes to the intimate parts, that's another story and most of us can relate to especially first timers. In this blog, we'll discuss how you can prepare for your first bikini wax and walk out with confidence in your summer swimsuit!

Break the ice!

Curious about bikini waxing for the first time but self-conscious about how it is going to be? This is a common reaction and it’s nothing to be ashamed of. Everyone is going to be a bit self-conscious because you will be totally exposed from the waist down.

To help you overcome this awkward phase, keep in mind that your waxing professional has been waxing all the parts of the body as a profession for many years. This means she has seen it all and won't judge how you look down there.

Communication is key

Let your waxing professional know that it is your first time getting a bikini wax. Tell them if you are feeling nervous. Let her know if you have sensitive skin or any other concerns and how you would like the pace of the process to go.

There are a few methods that your waxing professional can share with you, about how to make the process go smoothly.

For example, if you prefer the countdown method, hold your breath at the count of three. If there are issues such as medication, menstruation or pregnancy that need to be addressed, make sure to let your waxing professional know, and she'll use her judgment to decide the suitability of a bikini wax. Most of the time, there is no problem.

Remember, your waxing professionals' priorities are to make you feel beautiful, comfortable and confident as soon as you walk out the door.

Know the types of bikini wax based on your needs

You may not be aware of this but there are many types of bikini waxes based on the shape, how much hair is taken off and the price. Do your research on different spas, salons, or waxing bars to find out what works best for you.

Every location will have their own versions of bikini waxes that are done differently with regards to the style, how much hair left is taken off, and the price charged on the menu. Here are the general types of bikini waxes:

  • Regular bikini wax: Removes the hair outside the bikini line. Recommended for first timers as a starting point before moving forward. Ideal for those who want a quick clean up on the bikini line.
  • Full bikini wax: Removes the hair deeper to the sides of the bikini line than the regular bikini wax and removes a bit of hair on top for a more defined triangle shape.
  • French bikini wax: Removes the hair deeper to the sides of the bikini line than the regular wax, but removes all the hair on the front except for a small strip and stops before the back of the buttocks.
  • Brazilian bikini wax: Removes all of the hair from the bikini line and the front and continues to the back of the buttocks. A small strip, triangle or any shape you wish can be left in the front. Ideal for those who want to be almost completely hairless in the front and back.
  • Hollywood: Removes all the hair from the bikini line, front and back of the buttocks, leaving absolutely no hair left behind. Not recommended for first timers as it can be intimidating.

Before you start with your waxing service, communicate with your waxing professional to double check that you are getting what you want. As well as how you want your bikini wax to look. Because you want to make sure you are getting the best out of your first-time wax.

Do not shave or tan for two weeks before your waxing appointment

To ensure you get the best result from your waxing service, avoid shaving or tanning the area that will be waxed. Do this at least two weeks before your waxing appointment.

The hair length must be at least a quarter inch long for the hairs to be successfully pulled off. If the hair is too short, the hot wax and waxing strip cannot grip onto the hair.

The idea is to grow out the hair as long as you can for waxing to work because you don't want to be sent home and not being able to get waxed! You should also avoid tanning the area because it can cause adverse reactions due to the chemicals involved in the tan.

Wear comfortable bottoms

Because waxing is a form of exfoliation, it removes the first layer of skin and makes your skin vulnerable and sensitive.

Wear comfortable bottoms such as cotton panties and cotton pants or sweats with plenty of airflow. Any close contact of irritating fabric such as lace can irritate the skin and cause redness and itchiness.

During the waxing service, you will be asked to take your bottoms off. However, you may choose to leave them on if you find it more comfortable. Your waxing professional will provide you with disposable panties to provide coverage if needed.

Relax and take a deep breath

After you have entered the waxing room and removed your bottoms, you will be laid face up on the bed.

Every spa, salon or waxing bar has its own procedure when it comes to bikini waxing. Your waxing professional will start by applying baby powder to the area to be waxed so the hot wax can adhere better to the skin.

A generous layer of hot wax will be spread on the hairs. Let your waxing professional know if it is too hot so she'll cool it off for you. A layer of waxing strip paper is then rubbed over the hot wax. This is where you need to relax, take a deep breath and think of something positive!

Your waxing professional will quickly, in one sweep motion, pull off the waxing strip in the opposite direction of your hair growth. This will allow the hairs to be completely pulled out from the hair follicles.

We are not going to lie but it will be painful for the first time. Although once you have survived the first strip, just a few more here or there, depending on which type of bikini wax you get, and you are done!

If you generally have a good tolerance for pain, this should be manageable. But if you are on the squirmy side, you can take a painkiller or apply numbing cream to the area to be treated at least one hour before your waxing appointment.

Once you get the jist of it, the pain is not as bad you think!

Do post-treatment care

After waxing, your skin will become red and sensitive. Your waxing professional will apply a soothing lotion to help alleviate the pain and reduce the redness and sensitivity.

Make sure you do not exfoliate, workout, perform strenuous exercise, and have sex for 24 hours after you have done waxing because these activities can irritate the skin and cause possible reactions.
